About The Department
Year of Establishment: Academic Session of Affiliation - Honours(1994-1995), General(1981-1982)
Brief History
The Department of Botany at Parimal Mitra Smriti Mahavidyalaya was established in 2016, expanding the college’s academic offerings beyond Arts and Commerce, which had been introduced since the college’s inception in 1985. The department began its academic journey on the first floor of the Science building, known as the Einstein Building where it continues to develop and expand. It offers Program courses under the CBCS curriculum and Major and MDC courses under the FYUGP curriculum. Initially staffed by guest faculty, the department welcomed its first substantive teachers, Dr. Ritu Rai and Dr. Shuvadeep Majumdar, in 2019. Presently, the department is led by Dr. Ritu Rai (Head of the Department), supported by guest teacher Ms. Maitri Saha and non-teaching staff member Nilashish Saha.
Vision
The Department of Botany envisions evolving into a center of excellence in botanical education and research. Its primary goal is to inspire curiosity, scientific inquiry, and environmental awareness among students. By fostering a nurturing learning environment, the faculty members are committed to offering personalized guidance, career counseling, and skill enhancement programs. The department not only aims to produce successful students excelling in academics, but also to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for diverse career paths.
Mission
From its inception, the department aimed to provide quality education in plant sciences. Despite being relatively new, the department is equipped with essential infrastructure and well-established laboratory to facilitate effective course delivery. A dedicated departmental library and a small herbarium repository, maintained by the students, further enhance the learning experience. The department follows a structured schedule of theory and practical classes, enriched by excursions, study tours, seminars, special lectures, and workshops conducted annually. In line with its mission to foster scientific curiosity and environmental awareness, the department actively organizes engaging programs such as poster presentations and biodiversity awareness campaigns, encouraging active student participation.

- The department believes that a student goes out of the College having knowledge not only of their Major and Minor subjects, but also should develop an overall idea regarding world politics, rights and duties, awareness of social concerns etc.Therefore,debates and quiz competitions are held to evoke their interest in these topics. Eco Awareness is an important aspect that the department highlights through different programmes.
- Opportunities for one-to-one interaction with the faculty members help to create a bond. Apart from the Counselling Cell of the College, the Department also counsel pupils on different issues that they face.
- Creative writing endeavours abound, enriching students' academic experience and preparing them for diverse career paths.
- We believe in Inter Departmental engagement. Faculty from the Department of Sanskrit have taken classes in this Department. It has helped the students in a better understanding of the Indian Classical texts in Translation.The Seminars with the Department of History help in developing perspectives on different Periods of Literature.
- Parent Teacher meetings allow parents and teachers to discuss a student’s progress, strengths and areas that need improvement. They facilitate a partnership that ultimately benefits the students’ education and well-being.
- Overall, the English department is a dynamic hub of learning and creativity, nurturing a love for language and literature while equipping students with valuable skills for their personal and professional lives.
