Year of Establishment: Academic Session of Affiliation - Honours(1994-1995), General(1981-1982)
Brief History of the department
History as a general subject was introduced in 1985 since the inception of the college. In the year 1996 Honours was introduced. At the initial phase Prof. Subhalaxmi Pandey took charge over the department of history on 8th February 1986. She resigned from her post on 29.09.1987. Later Prof. Nupur Das joined the college on 01.08.1987 and resigned on 23.12.2003.
Dr. Shesadri Prasad Bose and Dr. Swapan Kr. Bhowmik joined the department on 01.07.2005 against substantive posts. In order to cater to the growing number of students the college authority decided to appoint three more Part-time Teachers (SACT). At this moment the department has two (02) substantive teachers and three (03) Governments approved Part-time Teachers (SACT).
Dr. Shesadri Prasad Bose served as Head of the Department from 01.07.2005 to 31.12.2021 and through the departmental meeting held on 24.12.2021, it was decided unanimously that w.e.f. 01.01.2022 Dr. Swapan Kr. Bhowmik would be the Head of the Department of History.

Vision
As our college is placed in a backward area, so we try at our best in encouraging the students to study more. So that the deprived section of the society are well-placed particularly in the job market.
Mission
It’s the prime objective of the lessons of History is to give a sense of the past to build up our rich socio-economic and cultural heritage of India keeping in mind that Ethos the Department of History’s mission has been –
- To make the students the varied threads of political and cultural lineage of Indian subcontinent.
- To keep the students alert about the socio-cultural and political mutations of the world and to imparting the knowledge and information of the rational thoughts in the classroom teachings. Keeping it in mind the socio-cultural diversity of the region, the responsibility of the department of History is to foster the sense of socio-economic growth and integration among the students.

- The department believes that a student goes out of the College having knowledge not only of their Major and Minor subjects, but also should develop an overall idea regarding world politics, rights and duties, awareness of social concerns etc.Therefore,debates and quiz competitions are held to evoke their interest in these topics. Eco Awareness is an important aspect that the department highlights through different programmes.
- Opportunities for one-to-one interaction with the faculty members help to create a bond. Apart from the Counselling Cell of the College, the Department also counsel pupils on different issues that they face.
- Creative writing endeavours abound, enriching students' academic experience and preparing them for diverse career paths.
- We believe in Inter Departmental engagement. Faculty from the Department of Sanskrit have taken classes in this Department. It has helped the students in a better understanding of the Indian Classical texts in Translation.The Seminars with the Department of History help in developing perspectives on different Periods of Literature.
- Parent Teacher meetings allow parents and teachers to discuss a student’s progress, strengths and areas that need improvement. They facilitate a partnership that ultimately benefits the students’ education and well-being.
- Overall, the English department is a dynamic hub of learning and creativity, nurturing a love for language and literature while equipping students with valuable skills for their personal and professional lives.
