Year of Establishment: Academic Session of Affiliation - Honours(1994-1995), General(1981-1982)

Brief History of the department

The department of Nepali is one of the major departments of Parimal Mitra Smriti Mahavidyalaya which began its journey with General Course in the year 2002. Honours Course in Nepali was introduced in the year 2007. In that year the intake capacity in Honours was 30, now it has been increased to 55. Remika Thapa joined this department against substantive post on 26-09-2006. After that Dr. Rajiv Biswakarma (SACT) joined on 04-08-2008. The Department has again been enriched with the joining of Dr. Amir Darjee on 16-04-2010 and Miss Narmi Gurung ( SACT) on 11-08-2018.The student’s performance in the department is very much progressive and satisfactory. Students are passing out with appreciable percentage of marks and opting for higher education (MA, M. Phil, Ph. D) in large numbers. The qualifying percentage in NET, NETJRF, SET and other competitive exams is also appreciable. Many students are employed in government and private sectors as well. Some have excelled in self-employment and entrepreneurship too. These ex-students form a strong bond and harmonious relationship with the department as an alumni. They show their keenness even flair in various fields of Academics. Being the only college in a vast area of this Dooars region, the concerned department of the college has the responsibility to save the value – educational, literary and cultural.

Vision

The Dooars, a long stretch of the tea garden belt of the Jalpaiguri district, is the region inhabited by the people of different communities speaking in different languages, mainly Nepali, Bengali, Hindi and Sadri. The peaceful, harmonious coexistence of all linguistic communities is the unique beauty of Dooars. Even an ordinary man and woman can speak or understand these languages with equal ease. In most of the schools in this region the medium of instruction is vernacular (mother tongue of the respective community). Forty percent of the students in the Parimal Mitra Smriti Mahavidyalaya with significant portion of ST students use Nepali for writing their answers in the examinations. So, Nepali language in this college is not only a subject of academic study but a medium of expression as well. Being the only college in a vast area of this region, the concerned department of the college has the responsibility to save the value-educational, literary and cultural.

Departmental Highlights

The English department of our college is vibrant and diverse, offering a range of courses that delve deep into literature, language, and communication.
Our dedicated faculty comprises of accomplished and passionate educators who foster critical thinking and analytical skills among students.
Through interactive seminars, workshops, and literary events, students engage with classic and contemporary texts, honing their writing and speaking abilities.
The department also emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging connections between literature and other fields such as history, psychology, and cultural studies.
The department believes that a student goes out of the College having knowledge not only of their Major and Minor subjects, but also should develop an overall idea regarding world politics, rights and duties, awareness of social concerns etc.Therefore,debates and quiz competitions are held to evoke their interest in these topics. Eco Awareness is an important aspect that the department highlights through different programmes.
Opportunities for one-to-one interaction with the faculty members help to create a bond. Apart from the Counselling Cell of the College, the Department also counsel pupils on different issues that they face.
Creative writing endeavours abound, enriching students' academic experience and preparing them for diverse career paths.
We believe in Inter Departmental engagement. Faculty from the Department of Sanskrit have taken classes in this Department. It has helped the students in a better understanding of the Indian Classical texts in Translation.The Seminars with the Department of History help in developing perspectives on different Periods of Literature.
Parent Teacher meetings allow parents and teachers to discuss a student’s progress, strengths and areas that need improvement. They facilitate a partnership that ultimately benefits the students’ education and well-being.
Overall, the English department is a dynamic hub of learning and creativity, nurturing a love for language and literature while equipping students with valuable skills for their personal and professional lives.
