Brief History of the department
The department of sociology started in 2012 with general course only. The department began with a guest teacher Sumana Basumata in the year 2013. Ms Piyali Sikdar joined the college on 1st July 2013. At present the department is running with two State Aided College Teachers (SACT).
Vision
The sociology department consists of faculty and staff who are energetic and effectively engaged in teaching, community building etc. Sociology classes are rigorous, inclusive, inspiring and well connected to the world outside the class room. It has been the visionary goal of the department to enable the students to develop sociological imagination while gaining enriching experiences and tangible skills that will lead to future success.

The sociology department seeks to

- Through interactive seminars, workshops, and literary events, students engage with classic and contemporary texts, honing their writing and speaking abilities.
- The department also emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging connections between literature and other fields such as history, psychology, and cultural studies.
- The department believes that a student goes out of the College having knowledge not only of their Major and Minor subjects, but also should develop an overall idea regarding world politics, rights and duties, awareness of social concerns etc.Therefore,debates and quiz competitions are held to evoke their interest in these topics. Eco Awareness is an important aspect that the department highlights through different programmes.
- Opportunities for one-to-one interaction with the faculty members help to create a bond. Apart from the Counselling Cell of the College, the Department also counsel pupils on different issues that they face.
- Creative writing endeavours abound, enriching students' academic experience and preparing them for diverse career paths.
- We believe in Inter Departmental engagement. Faculty from the Department of Sanskrit have taken classes in this Department. It has helped the students in a better understanding of the Indian Classical texts in Translation.The Seminars with the Department of History help in developing perspectives on different Periods of Literature.
- Parent Teacher meetings allow parents and teachers to discuss a student’s progress, strengths and areas that need improvement. They facilitate a partnership that ultimately benefits the students’ education and well-being.
- Overall, the English department is a dynamic hub of learning and creativity, nurturing a love for language and literature while equipping students with valuable skills for their personal and professional lives.
